Inmate texting apps are the most effective way to text inmate stay in touch with a relative or friend who is currently in prison. These apps are designed to comply with prison regulations and permit family and friends to send messages, pictures and video calls, eCards and even money to their trust accounts at prison. In addition to these messaging apps, there are numerous federal inmate applications that provide additional services, such as video visits and phone calls.

JPay for instance, allows family and friends to transfer money directly into an inmate’s trust account. They can also send videos, photos, emails, and eCards. It also lets them make personalized postcards featuring personal photos. It is a safer, more secure alternative to regular mail.

Another popular texting application for prisoners is GettingOut. It offers "simple, secure communication" between inmates and their loved ones. The app, available in certain correctional facilities, allows inmates to upload pictures and message their families and friends via their tablets. It costs inmates $0.25 for each message and loved ones pay for the data used to view their messages (but not for explicit pictures).
